"The Turnip Farmer"

Tabor seems like a simple farmer, but it's dangerous to make assumptions. _________________ Selena Thomason

This story illustrates a theme that is common to civilizations ranging from the ancient Greeks to India. In these stories, important people or even gods disguised themselves as commoners to see how others would treat them. As an example, the goddess Hera disguised herself as an old woman to see whether the hero Jason would help her cross a river if she looked like someone unimportant.
Christianity adopted this idea when Jesus said that, what one does to the least of Jesus' followers, one does to Jesus. In "The Prince and the Pauper," the heir to the throne is forced to live among commoners, and he remembers how he was treated by members of the gentry. Lord Jared obviously read none of these stories, or he would not have acted as he did toward Tabor! |
